PostSubject: Freebie Friday - Winamp   Sat Jun 12, 2010 6:30 am

Well, havoc seems to be doing well with Frag Friday, so I don't know if this will be a regular feature. However, enjoy this one!

Winamp is a music player for Windows, and my personal choice for reasons I will outline here. I am trying a new format: outlining the freebie in five points.

1. The visualizations in Winamp are beautiful and rhytmic. There is a huge selection to choose from, and they change dynamically. Here are a few examples:

2. Video playback in Winamp is rudimentary at best. It has a few basic features, and many times files will not play. Bottom line: Winamp is more suited for music.

3. Extension support is one of Winamp's most famous features. Whether you want to get lyrics for a song or play obscure 8-bit music tracks, there's an extension for it. One of my favourites is Win7Shell, which adds jumplist and aero thumbnail support in Windows 7. It can display a song progress bar on the program in the taskbar, and control Winamp through a hover thumbnail menu.

4. A built-in browser can quickly connect you to lyrics, artist information, and online radio.

5. Advanced tagging and metadata support will let you change any file information you wish. There is also a rating system and a cover-art finder. My only complaint about the tagging features is that ratings are not written to the metadata; meaning they will be reset if the files are moved.

Winamp is an awesome music player. It has all the features you would ever want, and more. It has been around since 1997 and is being updated on a regular basis. It is a great alternative to iTunes (ugh) and with iPod and MP3 player synch support, will ensure you'll never need another music player.

Winamp is a free download for Windows:

ayup, i can testify.

i have been a pro user for 4 years now.

though rudimentry, winampis excellent at loading flash videos, and even flash games. If you ever get one downloaded, winamp will play it.

the best part of winamp is that it supports the FLAC codec(Free Lossless Audio Codec)

Must be a glitch on your end. I never had any problems. Then again, I only use the Bento skin. I only changed to Modern to show it in the screenshot.

I used to use this. Then I used iTunes, and now I use Zune.

I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema for 1.3.2013 for video.

iTunes sucks.

For video I use KMPlayer, it's very nice.

Yeah, for Windows, iTunes really isn't an good option unless one is tied into some Apple product.

I completely forgot about Winamp until this post. From experience I know it's nice software, but it simply did too much for me. Zune suits me just fine.

So what's your story for CS5? I bought CS4 far too late in release cycle, so my copy was outdated after a few months... Sad .

I used to use winamp, and I liked it but I just have no use for it anymore.

I use iTunes because I have an ipod.

and for videos I use Media Player Classic.

Yes, because Kermy needs to hook up his hearing aid to a stereo to hear the real world. Razz

You bought it? Wow.

Yeah, I "acquired" CS5, it's pretty good. What stands out the most are the content-aware features. Although they changed the rendering mechanism for 3D models which screwed up a picture I was working on.

I bought it at the discounted student price. I just couldn't stand having a pirated Photoshop anymore.
